Masonite Shield
The rearranged fixture with Gortletteragh was played in Cornageeha on Saturday last. Having built up a six point lead with a few minutes remaining, we held on for a two point victory following a late Gortletteragh onslaught. Having finished level with Annaduff on points, it was agreed to toss a coin for the right to play Allen Gaels in the Shield final. In our second victory over Annaduff in a few weeks (!) we now play in the Shield final next weekend. Somehow though, this time I don’t think Annaduff were too disappointed.
The team and scorers against Gortletteragh was: Feargal Mc Gill, Seamus Mallon, Morgan Shanley, Jason Conroy, Shane Conroy, John Mc Guinness, Conor Mc Cauley, Gary Mc Closkey (0-1), Michael Duignan (0-1), Trevor Howard (0-2), Colm Farrell (0-1), David O Connor, Niall Mc Gowan (0-4), Robert Moran and Brian Conroy (0-1). Sub used: Mark Mc Closkey

Best Wishes
Next Saturday club player, underage coach and referee Brian Mallon walks down the aisle to tie the knot with Edel Hughes from Ballinalee, Co Longford. We’d like to extend our best wishes to a very popular couple for a great day on Saturday and long life and happiness together.

GOAL Mile
You’ll all be aware by now that the GOAL mile will be taking place at our club grounds on New Year’s Day. Former player and mentor Noel Mahon is again the man in charge and Noel has a list of celebrities lined up for the day which includes Eleanor Shanley, Charlie Mc Gettigan and Mick Flavin.
Sponsorship cards are currently in circulation around the parish and further afield and in the context of the hundreds of euros that will be spent on the trimmings of Christmas this year, we’d ask you to dig deep to help those less fortunate and contribute to the GOAL cause. Music, a Monster Raffle and Charity Auction will follow in the Copper Still with The Rodeo Man, Sean Mahon, conducting proceedings and I hear that among the many top class items that will be up for auction is a signed hurl from Kilkenny’s master hurling craftsman DJ Carey.
If you would like to make a donation, feel like walking or running the mile, or require any additional information, give Noel a call on 087 2646931 and he’ll set you straight.

The Division 1 Shield Final against Allen Gaels will be played on Sunday afternoon next in Annaduff at 1pm.

Division 1 Shield
We maintained our unbeaten run in the Division 1 Shield when a late Colm Farrell point secured a draw with Aughavas on Saturday last. After a close first half, Bornacoola opened up a three point gap midway through the second half to lead 0-7 to 0-4 but four unanswered points from the home side left them leading by the minimum with time almost up, before Colm Farrell levelled matters at 0-8 apiece to ensure a share of the spoils.

Well deserved nominations for both Ladies.

Senior Championship
Two late scores denied us our second victory in the Championship on Saturday evening, but a draw was a fair result in Cloone. John Mc Guinness scored a fine goal to leave Bornacoola ahead at the interval but a second half penalty for St Caillin’s brought them back into the game and ensured the scores were tied at 1-11 each at the final whistle.

Junior A Championship
An excellent performance from the Junior team on Sunday came up just short against Melvin Gaels and we had to settle for a draw in a game we probably should have won. U-14 League
The U-14 team have had a tremendous run in the league this year which was finally brought to a halt when Ballinaglera came from behind to deny us a famous victory in the play off game last week. Retirement
All at the club would like to wish the very best in retirement to Mary Gannon and husband Jim who provided an excellent service to the parish from their premises in Clonmorris for a long number of years. A great house for a chat and a wonderful gathering place at the crossroads, the closure of the Post Office is a sad event for everyone in Bornacoola and sees the end of yet another landmark institution.
It seems nowadays that the worth of any institution is only measured coldly in terms of the profit and loss sheet Any attempt to evaluate Bornacoola Post Office and the immeasurable contributions of the Bohan and Gannon families to the life of the area in such a way would be to completely overlook the huge role of such institutions in a social context within rural Ireland. It was a gathering point, a place where neighbours met and shared their news, a focus for a small rural community, a place where a sympathetic ear would be available and a problem could be shared and thus halved. The Post Office will be sadly missed.
On Friday night, the various Associations within the parish come together to celebrate the contribution of the Gannons. The function will be held in the Community Centre at 9pm and we’d ask you to support it if at all possible.

News 26 - 04 - 06

Young Bors make their debuts
Last Saturday saw the latest generation of young Bors make their debuts in the black & amber at an under 10 blitz in Gortletteragh. A fantastic day saw the return of the black and amber hooped jerseys and our young guns did themselves proud in games against Mohill, Drumreilly/Aughwillian, Carrigallen and Gortletteragh.
Our supporters saw some great individual performances and most importantly the first steps of a new Bornacoola team throughout the morning.
Representing Bornacoola on Saturday were; Ronan Mulligan, Clara Reid, Fergal Hackett, Gearoid Mulligan, Liam Mulligan, Seona Cosgrove, Kevin Mulligan, Sean Muldowney, Robert O'Byrne, Kevin Shanley, Shannon Boyle, Aaron Hackett, Michelle Hackett. Dillon Hackett, Karl Mallon, Cian Mallon.

No joy for the Bors in Killarney on Saturday last. Aiden Dockery gave a wonderful performance in Recitation, but the title went to Cornafean. In Tráth na gCeist, a very experienced Monaleen team from Limerick came away with the honours despite the best efforts of Aidan, Liam Rabbitte and Marie Therese Dockery. However, there was some joy for Leitrim in the Ballad Group where Aughnasheelin gained just reward for all of the effort they have put in over the years by finally capturing that elusive All Ireland title. To Cait, Síle, Sinead, Brendan, Declan and all in the Aughnasheelin club we extend our congratulations on this excellent achievement

Division 5
Glenfarne/Kilty were the visitors to Dromod on Sunday and proved much too strong for a young Bornacoola side. Aidan Reilly did find the net for the home team, but the visitors ultimately enjoyed a comfortable victory on a scoreline of 2-15 to 1-3.

Mick Mc Garry RIP
On behalf of the club we’d like to extend our deepest Sympthies to the Mc Garry family (Dromod) on the tragic death of Mick last week. Mick was one of the great characters of the area and will be sorely missed. Poblachtánaigh den scoth a bhí sé freisin.
D’obair sé go dian ar son a Thír dúchais, ar son saoirse an Tír sin agus an méid in a chreid sé go hiomlán. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a Anam.

GOAL Mile
Bornacoola was the venue for the 2nd annual GOAL mile on New Year’s Day and many club players and members participated in the event which raised a significant amount for this worthy charity. Well done to Christy Carroll and Charlie Mc Gettigan for setting runners and walkers on their way and to all those who provided sponsorship and indeed took part in the event.
Our own Noel Mahon was the driving force behind the whole affair and he deserves great credit for the wonderful job he performed in organising the event. Noel has asked us to pass on his thanks to the club for hosting the event and to all those from the parish who participated on New Year’s Day.
