Ladies Football

The Ladies team are scheduled to play Glencar/Manor at home on Sunday next. The team have been training hard over the past few weeks and a number of old faces have returned to the fold.

U-14 Training
There is training for all U-14’s tonight (Tuesday). All panel members intending to play in Féile should be in attendance for team photos.

Scór Sinsear

Our Tráth na gCeist team of Aiden Dockery, Liam Rabbitte and Feargal Mc Gill head to Killarney on Saturday next for the All Ireland finals of Scór Sinsear. This is the third time that Bornacoola have qualified for the All Ireland final in Question Time at Senior level and the hope is that it will be third time lucky. Best wishes to our fellow Leitrim participants Dromahaire (instrumental music), Glencar/Manor (Figure Dancing), Sinead Egan (Aughnasheelin – Solo Singing) and the Fenagh Novelty Act.

Sympathy
Our sympathy is extended to all who mourn Fr Kevin Sullivan, PP Eanach Dubh who passed away last week. Fr Kevin was a great GAA man and liked nothing better than to pass an hour or two talking football. Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a Anam Dhílis.

Dublin Championship

The Dublin Senior football Championship is underway and our own David O’Connor starred at midfield for holders UCD on Wednesday night last as they defeated Garda in the first round. A couple of years ago, another current Bornacoola player – Philip Howard – also played in the Dublin Senior Championship with Erin’s Hope (the St Patrick’s College GAA club). Indeed over the years many Bornacoola players have played in Dublin – Michael Farrell (Postal Gaels) and Ciaran Fallon (Civil Service) are two of a recent vintage that spring to mind.

Ladies U-14
The Ladies U-14 team were involved in a great game against Fenagh last week. In a game that was close throughout, Bornacoola emerged as three point winners on a 2-10 to 2-7 scoreline. This is the first time that we’ve had an U-14 team since 2004, so it was terrific to get the year underway with a victory. The team on duty was Zoe Cosgrove, Sheena Mc Cauley, Sharon Mc Gowan, Tara Hackett, Nadine Hackett, Ciara Hackett, Lisa Geelan and Nicola Rogers

Cumann na mBunscoil
Our girls schools team faced a very strong Aughawillan last week and were unlucky to lose by just a single point. The Bornacoola panel was Maria Cumiskey, Lisa Geelan, Nadine Hackett, Zoe Cosgrove, Laura Jones, Orla Mc Weeney, Sarah Mc Weeney, Shannon Boyle, Clara Reid, Tanya Donnelly, Celine Bolger, Coleen Bohan and Dawn Hackett.

Senior League
Our shield game scheduled for last weekend was cancelled due to the unfortunate passing of John Gormley (Aughnasheelin) – our deepest sympathies are extended to his family. This weekend the Masonite League Division 1 gets underway with a home tie against Aughawillan on Saturday evening at 6.30pm.

U-16 League
The U-16 team played Glenfarne on Friday night last and put in an encouraging performance, but were unlucky to lose to a stronger North Leitrim outfit

Allianz League

A great occasion in Cloone on Sunday and while Leitrim came up just short on the day, it was a very good display from the Leitrim lads against what is a fine Monaghan team. Gary Mc Closkey and Michael Duignan started at midfield while David O Connor made an appearance as a temporary substitute in the first half. Colm Farrell and Philip Howard completed the Bornacoola representation on the panel.

Division 3 League
The Division 3 team maintained their excellent start to the season with a good win over Gortleterragh in Cornageeha on Saturday evening. Despite missing five regulars, the Bors were quickly out of the blocks and scored three goals in the first twenty minutes to leave Gortletteragh with a mountain to climb. The first came from Brian Conroy with Niall Mc Gowan supplying two. A penalty save from Bornacoola keeper Ollie Vaughan denied the home team their best goal scoring chance.
In the second period, Gortletteragh stuck to the task manfully and at one point had reduced a nine point gap to just four but Bornacoola steadied the ship in the closing minutes to run out 3-7 to 0-10 victors.
The team and scorers was: Ollie Vaughan, Brian Mallon, John Reynolds, Christy Bohan, Brendan Duignan, Richie Bohan, Dermot Shanley, Trevor Howard, Danny Canning, Bobby Shanley (0-2), John Bohan, Niall Mc Gowan (2-2), Robert Moran (0-1), Brian Conroy (1-2) and Brian Reilly. Subs used were Sean Ryan and Aiden Reilly while David Mulligan and Mervyn Howard completed the panel on duty.
The action switches to the Shield C Competition on Sunday, when we play Mohill away from home at 12 noon. Annaduff and Sean O Heslins are the other teams in this group.

U-10 Blitz
The latest generation of young Bors gave a fine display on Easter Saturday when they took part in the first of a series of under 10 blitz's. With the sun beaming down many players made debuts as the Bors played four games against Aughnasheelin, Cloone, Aughavas and Kiltubrid. For the record the Bors finished the morning’s football with two wins, a draw and a defeat.
A strong traveling support saw many impressive performances with Luke Jones, Robert Beirne, Kevin Mulligan, Gearoid Mulligan, Michelle Hackett, Liam Jones, Sean Muldowney, Ronan Mulligan, Dillon Vaughan, Karl Mallon, Clara Reed, Cian Mallon, Shane Mallon, Jordon Cramp, Christy Sullivan, Oran Mc Guinness, Tanya Boyle and Aaron Hackett all featuring in the Black and Amber. (Apologies if any names were missed).
Our thanks to Aughasheelin GAA Club for hosting the blitz. A special thanks must be given to the traveling support who made the morning such a success for all involved and of course to trainers John Mc Guinness and John Reynolds for their contribution. Training is as usual at 11am on Saturday morning.

Division 5
The mixed form of the 3rd team continued on Sunday morning when St Caillin’s proved much too strong for us in Fenagh. Final score 3-10 to 0-2 for the home team.

Senior Challenge
Our thanks to Mohill for providing a very useful outing for our senior team on Monday morning last. We play Aughnasheelin in our first game in the Shield A (played without county players) on Saturday next at 6.30pm in Dromod. The other teams in this Division are Kiltubrid, Allen Gaels, Glenfarne and Eslin.

U-16 League
16 LeagueWe’re due to play Glenfarne in Dromod on Friday evening in the U-16 league. Confirmation of the fixtures should be elsewhere in this edition.

Junior A
The Division 3 team began their campaign in impressive fashion with an excellent victory over Mohill in Dromod on Saturday evening. The foundations for the win were laid early when goals from Brian Conroy and John Bohan set us on the road to victory. Mohill fought their way back into the game but two late points ensured we recorded our maiden victory of the 2007 campaign on a 2-9 to 1-10 scoreline.
The team and scorers was: Ollie Vaughan, Christy Bohan, Seamus Mallon, John Reynolds, Conor Mc Cauley (0-1), Richard Bohan, Dermot Shanley, Daniel Canning, Trevor Howard, Feargal Howard (0-1), Niall Mc Gowan (0-3), John Bohan (1-0), Sean Mc Keon (0-2), Brian Conroy (1-1) and Brian Mallon (0-1). Subs used were Robert Moran and Bobby Shanley. The boys are due to play Gortletteragh on Saturday next at 4.30pm in Cornageeha.

Scor Finals
A Connacht Scor title arrived for the club on Saturday night when our Question Time team qualified for the All Ireland final for the second year in a row. Aidan Dockery, Liam Rabbitte and Feargal Mc Gill were on duty and they will now represent Leitrim and Connacht at the All Ireland finals in Killarney on April 29th. Louise Staunton performed for us in Recitation and was unlucky not to join the five Leitrim winners on the night. Our congratulations to Glencar/Manorhamilton Figure Dancers, to Sinead Egan in Solo Singing, to the St Caillin’s Novelty Act and the Instrumental Music group from Dromahair who have all qualified for the All Ireland finals.

Junior B
The 3rd team played St Mary’s on Sunday morning in an entertaining game. Two goals for Carrick – one in either half – effectively wrapped up the points, but had we taken a number of good scoring chances it might have been a lot closer. The full time score was 2-5 to 1-4 and the Bornacoola team was: Ollie Vaughan, Sean Ryan, Richard Bohan, Christy Bohan, Brendan Duignan, John Reynolds, Damian Mc Gowan, Peter Mallon, John Bohan, Jackie Conboy, Feargal Howard, Sean Mc Keon, Mervyn Howard, John Shanley and Brian Reilly. Subs introduced were David Mulligan, Paschal Mahon and Kevin Mallon. This week’s game is against Fenagh on Sunday at 12pm in Fenagh.

Ladies Football
The Ladies team played Annaduff in Páirc Uí Choiligh on Sunday morning in their second league game of the campaign and showed a huge improvement on the previous week. Indeed had we managed to convert a few excellent first half goal chances, the game might have developed differently. As it was, at the other end of the field a certain Mrs Mallon was in terrific form for Annaduff and punished the Bornacoola defence on several occasions. An entertaining game which ended with a 4-9 to 3-1 victory for our neighbours.
The Bornacoola panel on Sunday was Michelle Reilly, Jillian Duignan, Niamh Reynolds. Orla Bohan, Sarah Duffy, Fiona Reilly, Charlotte Faughnan, Lisa Mc Gowan, Leonie Duffy, Cora Mc Cauley, Michelle O Beirne, Alison Mc Keon, Kelly Howard, Maeve Duffy, Louise Staunton and Naomi Faughnan

Around the Club
Our congratulations to former(?) player David Conroy on his recent engagement to Mairead Mc Hugh. We haven’t given up hope of a comeback to the playing fields for Mr Conroy just yet….. A huge crowd at the going away party for club members Naomi Faughnan and Ellen Duignan on Saturday last in the Vibe. The girls are Australia Bound from next weekend and we hope they have a terrific year. We look forward to seeing them back in the Bornacoola colours on their return….. Speaking of Australia, on her way home is Louise Farrell and she should be a terrific addition to the Ladies team in the coming weeks….. A great collection of Bornacoola people of all ages in the Hyde on Sunday last and Gary Mc Closkey’s crucial goal brought them all to their feet….. Another fine turnout at the Club Draw in the Bridge on Friday night and Kevin and his helpers are doing an excellent job in their organisation of the event. Our thanks to Mary and the Reynolds’ family for their usual exceptional hospitality….. Saturday morning training for all ages up to U-14 is going really well. Full credit to the two John’s (Reynolds and Mc Guinness), Kevin and Philip who are doing a terrific job with our young players….. Finally this week, a few birthdays to mention – Mary in Cloncolory would be most upset if she didn’t get a mention, as would Hubert in Esker who celebrates on the 16th I think, while local musicians Tom (Rooskey) and Ronnie (Cloonturk) are also adding another year around this time

U-10 Blitz
There is an U10 blitz in Aughnasheelin on Saturday next at 10.30am. Parents and players are asked to meet at the park in Dromod at 9.45am and to bring all football gear. This is a great opportunity for our younger players as they begin their careers in the black and amber.
