News 31 - 05 - 10

Division 3
An under strength Division 3 team kept up their push for promotion when overcoming Allen Gaels in Dromod on Saturday last. A goal in each half proved vital proved vital for the Bors and with two games remaining – against Drumkeerin and Annaduff – two wins will be enough to ensure promotion to Division 2 for the first time ever.

U-16 League
The U-16 team played Gortletteragh on Friday evening last in Cornageeha and were beaten on a scoreline of 1-13 to 1-8.

Golf Classic
Our thanks to all who took part in a particularly successful Golf Classic held in Carrick on Shannon Golf Club on Saturday last and also to those who sponsored tee’s and prizes on the day. The course as always was in excellent condition. A special word of praise for Micheal Mc Gowan and his team who put in an incredible amount of work over the past couple of months. Míle buíochas daoibh go léir.

Brendan Stenson R.I.P
The sympathies of the Club are extended to the Stenson family in Clonturk on the passing of Brendan last week. Brendan played football for Bornacoola, winning a county minor championship medal when he lined out at corner back for the club in the 1948 final victory and indeed his sons also turned out regularly in the Bornacoola colours. He was also a noted handballer and musician. To his wife Maureen and children Mary Brigid, Francis, Michael Patrick, and Tommy Joe and to his extended family we extend our deepest sympathies.

Club Draw
The Club Draw for May takes place in Cox’ of Dromod on Saturday night next with music by Enda Beirne.

New Arrival
Congratulations to Joe and Liz Hanley, Cloonturk on the birth of their fist baby, Michael Francis during the week.

Birthday Celebrations
Congratulations to Bornacoola footballer Declan Shanley who celebrated his 21st in the Copper Still on Saturday night last.

Bank Holiday Fixtures
A busy weekend ahead for all of Bornacoola’s adult teams. On Saturday evening the Senior team travel to Eslin for a 7pm throw-in in the Shield, on Sunday the Junior A team face Drumkeerin in Drumkeerin at 2.30pm in their penultimate Division 3 league game and on Monday the Junior C team host St Marys in Dromod at 3pm in Division 5.

Golf Classic
Carrick on Shannon Golf Club is the venue for Bornacoola’s bi-annual Golf classic this Saturday. The action gets underway at 8am. Cost of entry is €240 per team and for that you get a round of golf on the challenging course as well as lunch. The main organizer as always is our own golf supreme Micheál Mc Gowan – if you are interested in entering a team or indeed want to get on a team you can contact Micheál at 086 2561023 . Tee sponsorship is also available at €100. Best of luck to all involved.

Senior Shield
The Bornacoola Senior team maintained their unbeaten start to the year with a comfortable victory over a weakened Sean O Heslins in the Shield in Dromod on Saturday last. Leading by 0-8 to 0-2 at half time, a well worked goal finished to the net by Jonathan Duffy sealed the points as the Bors ran out 1-13 to 0-4 winners. Ladies 9-a-side
The Ladies recorded their first victory of the season with a win over Fenagh on Friday evening last.

Division 3
The Junior A team kept themselves in contention for promotion with a fine victory over Mohill in Dromod on Sunday morning last. A first half goal blitz which saw Aidan Reilly, Damian Moran (from the penalty spot) and Declan Shanley (twice) find the back of the Mohill net was the platform for this win as Bornacoola built on their early dominance to finish 4-9 to 1-7 winners.

Division 5
The Junior C team played Mohill on Sunday afternoon last and missing a number of regular starters left too high a mountain to climb as the visitors took the spoils on a final score of 1-11 to 0-5.
Team on duty was Dara Gavigan, David Faughnan, Brian Reilly, Tony Bohan, Roy Keenan, Brendan Duignan, Anthony Mulligan, Gerry Gearty, Alan Croghan, Conor Mc Weeney, Ollie Vaughan, Daniel Farrell, Anthony Mulligan, Ollie Mc Brearty, Jackie Conboy, Sub Alan Bohan. No game this weekend in Division 5.

New Addition
All at the club send their congratulations to former player Derek “Digger” Duignan (son of Seamus and Teresa) and his wife Renea on the birth of their first child – Jed Feidhlim Duignan – in Sydney last week.

U-16 League
The U-16’s played Leitrim Gaels in Dromod on Friday last and despite leading for long spells of the game, lost their discipline to some degree and ended up on the wrong side of a 3-8 to 3-3 scoreline. Their next game is this Friday evening in Gortletteragh at 7pm.

U-12 Blitz
The U-12’s will travel to Carrigallen this Wednesday evening to participate in the first blitz of the year and the action will get underway at 7pm.

Scéal Liatroma
Copies of the excellent Scéal Liatroma (a review of the last 25 years of the GAA in Leitrim) are currently available from Club Secretary Shane Reynolds at the reduced price of Eur10 if you are interested in purchasing a copy.

Division 3 League
The Junior A team traveled to Kiltubrid on Friday night last to play the home side under their impressive new lights. In a fast moving game, Bornacoola led from the start and continued their impressive form at this level with a 0-12 to 0-8 victory. The team on duty was: Dara Gavigan, John Reynolds, Seamus Mallon, Brian Reilly, David Mulligan, Paul Hackett, Mervyn Howard, Trevor Howard, Damian Moran, Jonathan Duffy, Declan Shanley, Niall Mc Gowan, Ollie Vaughan, Feargal Howard and Aidan Reilly. Subs used: John Bohan, Alan Croghan

U-14 Girls
Our under 14 girls had their second game in Dromod on Tuesday last and came away with a victory over a gallant Kiltubrid team.

Division 5
The Division 5 team played Cloone in Dromod on Sunday afternoon last. A second half goal from Aidan Reilly put the Bors five points clear and they looked on course for victory. However, two injury time goals for the visitors ensured a Cloone victory on a scoreline of 2-9 to 1-8.
The Bornacoola team was Dara Gavigan, Tony Bohan, Brian Reilly, John Shanley, Paul Hackett, Brendan Duignan, David Mulligan, Ollie Vaughan, Alan Croghan, Roy Keenan, John Bohan, Anthony Mulligan, Jackie Conboy, Ollie Mc Brearty and Aidan Reilly. Sub used: Gerry Gearty.

Senior Ladies
Bornacoola Ladies played their second 9-a-side League match against Drumkeerin in Dromod on Sunday last. The girls held a 0-7 to 0-3 interval lead and built on this advantage to lead 2-11 to 0-6 with time running out. However the visitors struck with a scoring blitz and recorded 4-1 without reply to steal victory in the closing minutes. The girls play Fenagh in their final 9-a-side game on this Friday evening in Fenagh at 8pm.
On duty at last Sunday's game were Susan Shanley, Rachel Duignan, Naomi Faughnan, Maeve Duffy, Jillian Duignan, Charlotte Faughnan, Leonie Duffy, Kelly Howard, Fiona Reilly, Sarah Duffy, Nadine Hackett, Louise Farrell, Sheena Faughnan, Aine Faughnan, Cora McCauley, Niamh Reynolds, Michelle O Beirne and Tanya Donnelly.

Golf Classic
Preparations for the Golf Classic are now in full swing. It takes place on Saturday week, May 29th in Carrick-on-Shannon Golf Club. If you haven’t already entered a team or sponsored a tee, give a call to Micheal Mc Gowan on 086 2561023.and he’ll sort you out. It will cost Eur240 to enter a team of four and there will be a host of attractive prizes on offer. Tee Sponsorship is available at a cost of Eur100.

U-16 League
St Osnatt’s were unable to fulfill their fixture against Bornacoola on Friday last so the points stayed with the Bors. This Friday night the boys are in action against Leitrim Gaels in Dromod at 7pm.

Wedding Bells
Our congratulations to Dermot Shanley (Clonboney) and his new wife Edel (Duignan) who were married on Saturday last and celebrated with their friends at a reception in the Landmark Hotel. Dermot has been a stalwart of many Bornacoola teams over the years and holds medals at all underage grades as well as Junior League and championship awards. Edel’s family are involved with the Eslin GAA club and we wish this popular couple long life and happiness together.

Engagement
It was a busy week for Junior star Brian Reilly – not only did he feature in both the Junior A and Junior C league games at the weekend, he also found time to get engaged to Grainne Sheridan from Co Longford. Congratulations to you both.
