Minor League
Our Minor team made it two wins from two when they overcame Kiltubrid by 2-4 to 1-4 in an exciting game in Dromod on Saturday morning last.
The team on duty was: Danny Farrell, Roy Keenan, Harry Comiskey, Barry Reid, Kevin Canning, Alan Croghan, Darran McGushin, Damien Moran 0-4, Anthony Mulligan 1-0, Tony Shanley 1-0, Darran Faughnan and Kevin Shanley.

Masonite Senior League
The 2009 season got underway for the Bors on Sunday afternoon with a trip to Pairc Ui Choilligh to play neighbours Annaduff. With a strong wind, Bornacoola took control from the outset and a well taken goal from Mark Mc Closkey ensured we enjoyed a seven point half time lead. Indeed the lead could have been greater but for a wonderful save from Kevin Ludlow to deny Brian Conroy. Annaduff rallied strongly in the second half and reduced the margin to three points at one stage when a crucial save from Gerry Gearty denied Annaduff what would have been an equalising goal. From there to the finish however, the Bors upped a gear and closed out the game to ensure a 1-11 to 0-9 victory.
The team on duty was: Gerry Gearty, Damian Mc Guinness, Morgan Shanley, Conor Mc Cauley, Paul Hackett, John Mc Guinness, Niall O Connor, Michael Duignan (0-4). Colm Farrell (0-1), Feargal Howard, David O Connor (0-1), Jonathan Duffy (0-1), Brian Conroy (0-1), Trevor Howard (0-1) and Mark Mc Closkey (1-2). Subs used were Sean Mc Keon and Declan Shanley. This Saturday we have a home game with Sean O hEslins at 4pm.

GOAL Mile
Well done once again to Bornacoola club man Noel Mahon on the outstanding work he continues to carry out on behalf of GOAL. This year’s GOAL mile, staged at the Bornacoola GAA grounds on New Year’s Day, brought in a grand total of €12,609 for the third world support agency. Well done to you all for your generosity.

U-16 and U-14 Leagues
The Bors find themselves in the 9-a-side division for U-16 this year where their opponents will include Ballinaglera, St Caillins, Glenfarne and Leitrim Gaels. In the U-14 competition, we will also compete at 9-a-side with Aughnasheelin, Drumkeerin, Glenfarne and St Osnatt’s providing the opposition.

Ladies Matters
We would like to welcome on board our new ladies manager for the year, Sean McCauley. We’d also like to thank Vinny Canning who has been taking ladies training up until now and will continue to have an involvement in the set up.

Training Area
Work on our new training ground is progressing very well and our thanks to Frank Reynolds Plant Hire and his staff for doing a wonderful job. We’d also like to thank our own "sparky" Aidan Hackett for doing the wiring and the lighting and indeed we were very lucky with the weather for the duration of the project. We would also like to thank our neighbour Brendan O’ Beirne for his cooperation and the club are deeply indebted to him as without his help we could not have proceeded with the work. Finally a word of thanks to vice chairman John McGuinness for planning and overseeing the project.

Club Draw and Presentation Night
This Friday, the Club Draw will be held in the Copper Still and will coincide with our Presentation night as the Minor team from last year will receive their medals and we will also have the presentation of the Player’s of the Year and Club Person of the Year Awards. Music on the night by Ronnie Duignan and all are welcome.

Seachtain na Gaeilge
We extend our congratulations to the Bornacoola Seachtain na Gaeilge team who won the Leitrim final in the Trath na gCeist on last Friday night. The team was Liam Rabbitt, Evelyn Reynolds, Marie Therese Dockery and Martina Hackett. Next hurdle is the Connaught final.
Scór Sinsear Preparations are well underway for Scór 2009. As this is the 40th anniversary of the competitions, it is a special year. The semi-finals in Leitrim will take place on March 6th and 7th.

Wedding Anniversary
Everyone at the club sends their best wishes to two of our most popular and dedicated members, Michael and Mary Mallon, who celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary recently. Micheal has performed just about every conceivable role in the club from player to manager to official during a lifetime’s involvement with Bornacoola GAA and his dedication to promoting Bornacoola is unrivalled.
Mary has also been an outstanding worker for the club over the years and has participated in Scor as well as contributing hugely as a key fundraiser for the club and in doing a million and one little tasks that go unnoticed by the world at large but which are essential in keeping a club ticking over.
Their children and grandchildren continue to carry the flame lit by Mary and Micheal as all are heavily involved in Bornacoola GAA matters. When one speaks of the strength of the GAA lying with the grassroots, it is people like the Mallons who are really being referred to.
Míle buíochas daoibh beirt le haghaidh an sár obair a dhéanann sibh ar son CLG Barr na Cúille is comhghairdeas ar an ócáid speisialta seo daoibh.

Minor League
The Minors began their campaign on Sunday morning when they played Gortletteragh in Dromod and recorded their first points of the season with an excellent victory. Next Saturday they have their second game in the competition when they are at home to Kiltubrid at 12pm.

Senior League
The Senior team get their Masonite League campaign underway on Sunday next when we make the short trip to Pairc Ui Choiligh to take on neighbours Annaduff in a game that will have a 1pm throw-in.

Congratulations
Our congratulations to John "Barnes" Shanley and wife Louise and to Tony Bohan and wife Maria on the respective births of their first sons at the weekend. While the two lads are staunch Bornacoola men, Louise and Maria are both from the other side of the bridge but rumour has it that Seamus Mallon has already filled in the registration forms for the latest additions to the Dromod area. Congratulations to you all.

Minor League
Heavy snow on Sunday meant the minor team had to postpone their 2009 debut when their game with Leitrim Gaels was called off. This Sunday the boys will be hoping for more favourable weather conditions when they take on Gortletteragh at home at 12pm. Gerry Gearty and Brian Mallon are the men in charge of the minor team for 2009.

Training Ground Development
The Club are about to undertake a major project in terms of developing an all weather training area to the rear of the stand at our grounds in Dromod. It will be an expensive undertaking and we will be embarking on a number of fundraising projects in the coming months to help deliver this necessary addition to our facilities.

Membership
Youth Membership of €5 per child (maximum of €10 per household) and full adult membership (€10 for non-playing and €30 for playing membership) is now available from Jackie Conboy, Pat Farrell, Patricia Bohan or Shane Reynolds. All those intending to play for the club in 2009, at both adult and underage level, should note that they must have their membership paid before they can play this year. The club are also planning a registration day for all underage players in the coming weeks.

Good luck Pat
This Saturday club stalwart and current Registrar Pat Farrell walks down the aisle with his fiancée Linda St Leger from Dublin. Pat has been a great servant to the club over many years and holds county championship medals at all underage levels with Bornacoola. Pat also starred for St Mels in the Leinster Colleges Championship and with UCD in the Sigerson Cup during his student days. He played with Leitrim at all levels – a particular highlight being his appearance in the green and gold in the Connacht Final of 2000 against Galway.
Unfortunately a bad knee injury cut Pat’s career short and while he is still very much involved in the club, he had to retire permanently last year after several fruitless attempts to get back in the jersey. On behalf of all at the club, we wish Pat and Linda the very best in their future lives together.
A word of good luck also to Pat’s backroom team on Saturday – brother Colm, the irrepressible Johnathan Duffy and Club Secretary Shane Reynolds. Early odds on speech lengths suggest the world record may well be in their sights!!

Underage Teams
Among those who will be taking charge of Underage teams this year will be at minor level Gerry Gearty and Brian Mallon, at U-16 Shane Reynolds, John Muldowney and Henry Faughnan and at U-14 Seamus Mallon and Noel Mc Closkey. Best of luck to you all.

Comhbhrón
The sympathies of the club are extended to the Farrell family in Cloncolory on the sad passing of Rosie Farrell on Thursday last. The Farrell’s have been involved in the Bornacoola GAA club for many years. Predeceased by her husband Paddy, we extend our sympathies to her children Pat, Christy, Tom, Sean, Peter, Michael, Mary and Bernadette, her sister Margaret as well as all her extended family and friends. Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a n-anam dhílis.

The Club Draw was cancelled on Saturday night last as a mark of respect to the late Rosie Farrell. However, it has been reorganised for this Saturday night in the Copper Still. Music on the night and all ticket sellers are asked to return their tickets to Kevin Mallon, Shane Reynolds, Gerry Boyle or Jackie Conboy before Saturday night.

Minor League
Bornacoola are in the 9-a-side Minor league this year. The competition gets underway on Sunday next with an away fixture in Leitrim village against Leitrim Gaels. Throw-in is 12noon.

Coaching Course
CLG Liatroma are organising foundation level coaching courses for all team mentors on Friday and Saturday next in Ballinamore and Drumkeerin. All of those involved in a coaching capacity with our club teams are expected to attend if they have not already completed the foundation level course. Further information is available from club Secretary Shane Reynolds 087 9751993. Even if you are not involved with one of the club teams this year but intend to get involved in the future, it is recommended that you attend the course as it will be compulsory for anyone working with teams in the future to have this qualification.
