Scor
A great night for Bornacoola at the Connacht Finals of Scór in Loughrea on Saturday evening last as our Question Time team of Liam Rabbite, Aidan Dockery and Louise Staunton ensured that the club qualified for its fourth All Ireland Final in five years in the discipline by capturing the Connacht title. The versatile Louise added to the victory by also qualifying for the finals of the Recitation competition.
Our congratulations to you all, and indeed to all the Leitrim competitors as Leitrim captured six of the eight titles on offer (Figure Dancing – Glencar Manorhamilton, Novelty Act – Sean O hEslins, Ballad Group – St Mary’s and Instrumental Music – Leitrim Gaels), and also took home the Cormac Mc Gill Cup for best overall county for the second year in succession. As always, the All Ireland finals this year will be an all ticket affair. However, if you are interested in traveling to Killarney, you are asked to contact Martina Hackett at 087 7963512
Division 3
The Division 3 team missed a great opportunity to secure their second win of the season when Fenagh were the visitors to Dromod on Saturday last. In a low scoring game, the Bors failed to find the target with any regularity and succumbed to a 0-7 to 0-5 defeat.
Division 5
The third team also failed to build on their excellent opening round victory when Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher visited Dromod on Sunday morning last. Much like the game the previous evening, a lack of scoring power proved costly as the North Leitrim team recorded a 0-7 to 0-3 victory.
Club Draw
The March Club Draw takes place this Saturday night in the Shannon Key Hotel in Rooskey. Your support as always will be greatly appreciated.
U-14 League
The U-14 team get their season underway this Saturday when they play Glenfarne in Dromod at 12 noon. This year we are in the 11-a-side competition and Cloone, Aughavas and Aughnasheelin complete the group.
Weekend Fixtures
The 2010 Shield competition gets underway next Saturday as we travel to Cloone to play Mohill at 5.1.5pm. This competition is of course played without County players and Bornacoola are in a division that includes Glencar/Manorhamilton, Sean O hEslins, Aughavas, Mohill and Eslin. On Sunday the Division 5 team have their third game of the campaign when they travel to Leitrim Gaels for a 2.30pm throw-in.
Seachtain na Gaeilge Quiz
Bornacoola’s Connacht championship winning quiz team came within a whisker of claiming the All Ireland Seachtain na Gaeilge quiz title in Croke Park on St Patrick’s Day but were defeated by a single mark in a tense final. It is of course a fantastic achievement to finish runners-up in the All Ireland for our team of Evelyn Reynolds, Liam Rabbitte and Aidan and Marie Therese Dockery and while they were naturally very disappointed to have come so close, they nonetheless did the club and parish proud. Comhgairdeas daoibh go léir is mar a deirfinn, beidh lá (agus seans) eile ag an bpaoraigh i 2011.

An Open Day for all children up to the age of 16 who are intending to play for Bornacoola in 2010 will be held in the park this Saturday morning at 11am. It is essential that all players who want to play underage football for the club are registered and it will only cost €5 to become a member of the Association for the year, ensuring insurance and injury cover. The maximum cost for any one family of youngsters will be €10. We would ask parents to attend also to ensure the correct information is supplied with filling out the membership application forms. Ádh Mór oraibh.

Anyone interested in purchasing a ticket can do so this week via club chairman Declan Conboy. Tickets cost €40 each and there is a great list of prizes on offer. We would ask all those in the club who were given tickets to sell to please return them before the weekend to Declan who can be contacted at 087 8395780
Best Wishes
Our best wishes to club stalwart Aidan Reilly (Cloonart) and his fiancée Sinead Hanley (Rooskey) who will be married this Friday. Aidan has been a great servant of the club over the years – on and off the field - and won a plethora of underage medals with Bornacoola before moving up to the adult ranks where he won Junior league and Championship medals in the Black and Amber. A series of unfortunate injuries over the years have probably prevented Aidan from reaching his full potential as a footballer, but he has had a clean run at things so far this year and is in great form at the moment.
Sinead meanwhile has become a familiar face at Bornacoola games over the years and has long been considered one of the Bors! Our best wishes to this very popular couple for a great day on Friday and long life and happiness together in the years ahead.

Kevin Reynolds R.I.P
The parish and surrounding areas were stunned at the weekend by the news of the tragic death of one of the areas most popular figures, Kevin Reynolds (Cloncolory). A son of Shay and Mary, Kevin played for the club for many years, mainly at underage level, but he also enjoyed a few great years at adult level and always maintained an interest in matters on the field over the years. Of course, being a Reynolds he also took part in Scór and was quite an accomplished dancer. As a youth, he sang in the local choir and I even remember him being a useful hurler when the club set up an underage hurling team in the late 80’s. Mind you, winning or losing was never too important for Kevin as long as there was a bit of fun to be had and wherever there was any bit of devilment going on, the likelihood was that Kevin would be there in the middle of it.
He was one of the most good natured people that you could ever hope to meet, and always seemed to have a little grin on his face that threatened to break into incontrollable laughter at any time. More often than not, it did! Kevin lived life to the full and built up an army of friends through Leitrim, Roscommon and beyond in his all too short time among us. He met and fell in love with Catherine Wynne from Mohill and from the first day that they were together it was obvious to us all that it was meant to be. They married a couple of years ago and had recently moved into a beautiful new home, opposite the house where Kevin was born, on the Mohill Road just outside of Dromod.
Kevin was widely respected and loved and over the last few days, literally everyone who knew him had their own little story to tell that typified his happy-go-lucky attitude and general love of life. All of our thoughts are with his wife Catherine, his mother and father Shay and Mary, his brothers Cathal and John, his extended family and his many, many friends in Bornacoola, Tarmonbarry and further afield. We are all honoured to have known Kevin and to have shared in his short life and his family must be extremely proud of everything he did, everything he was and everything he meant to so many people. Solas na bhfláitheas duit mo sean chara; ní bheidh do leithéid arís ann cinnte.

Our 3rd team ensured that all of our adult squads have begun the year on a positive note by recording a 1-5 to 0-7 victory over Sean O Heslins in Ballinamore on Sunday morning last. Good luck to Conor Mc Cauley and Niall O Connor as they line out for Leitrim against Mayo in the Connacht U21 Championship in Cloone on Wednesday evening and finally congratulations to the Leitrim Vocational School team who captured the All Ireland B title when defeating Limerick on Saturday and in particular to club chairman Declan Conboy who was very much involved with the team.

They now move on to the All Ireland final, which is held in Croke Park on St Patricks Day, alongside the All Ireland Club Finals. Well done to you all is go neirí go geal libh sa craobh chomórtais!
Sympathy
We extend our sympathy to the Shanley Family (Dromard) on the death of Jack in Westmeath during the week. Jack’s son, Peter, is chairman of the Downs GAA Club and was always on hand to ensure all went smoothly whenever Bornacoola trained in the Downs in recent years. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a Anam.
Fixtures
Only one game for the club at the weekend as on Saturday we entertain Drumkeerin in Division 2 in Dromod at 4.45pm.

Best Wishes
Our best wishes to club stalwarts Shane Reynolds and Orla Bohan who get married this Saturday in St Michael’s in Bornacoola. A very popular couple around the parish, Shane and Orla have been at the heart of the club for many years and both have served as players, administrators and even Scór performers with distinction for Bornacoola over many years. In a lengthy playing career, Shane won both Junior Championship and league medals with Bornacoola and while success eluded him at Senior level, he was very proud to be part of the Bornacoola team that regained it’s senior championship status in 1998 after nearly 40 years in the doldrums. He is currently the club Secretary.
Orla’s big onfield success came as part of the 2004 Ladies Junior Championship winning team; she has been involved in many administrative roles in recent years and has performed regularly in Scór for Bornacoola over the years. I’m sure this will be a great weekend for Shane, Orla and their families, and we wish you both all the very best in your married lives together.

Club Draw
The first Club Draw of the year takes place on Saturday night next in the Copper Still with music on the night as always. All ticket sellers are asked to return their tickets by Friday night to Kevin Mallon, Jackie Conboy or Shane Reynolds.
GOAL Mile
The GOAL mile held at the club grounds on New Year’s Day was another terrific success and subsequent events in Haiti have only served to undermine the importance of GOAL and its work with the underprivileged such as those affected by the earthquake disaster. This year’s GOAL mile raised a total of Eur9,657 and organizer Noel Mahon has been in touch to express his thanks to everyone who was involved. Indeed the membership of the GAA club are very proud of the fundraising work that Noel, a former player of distinction and prominent member, continues to carry out in this respect. Maith thú a Nollaig is lean ort leis an obair.
Training
Training commences on Friday night next in the club grounds at 8.30pm. All players are again reminded that they will not be permitted to play for the club in 2010 unless they have paid their membership fee of Eur30.

The Bornacoola U21 team put in a battling performance in difficult conditions against Drumkeerin in the quarter final of the 13-a-side championship in Drumreilly on Saturday last and were rewarded for their efforts with a nail biting one point victory and a place in the semi-finals. The key score of the game was a goal just before the interval when midfielder Damian Moran followed up on his own shot to find the net and give the Bors a two point lead at half time. The team on duty was: Damian Mc Gowan, Conor Mc Cauley, Mervyn Howard, Darren Mc Gushin, Paul Hackett, David Mulligan, Feargal Howard (0-3), Damian Moran (1-0), Harry Comiskey, Oliver Vaughan, Alan Croghan (0-1), Sean Mc Keon (0-1) and Declan Shanley.

Junior C Championship
The third team exited the championship on Sunday last as a physically more imposing Leitrim Gaels proved a bridge too far in the semi-final of the competition, played in Annaduff. The Gaels played with the aid of a decent breeze in the first half and despite a well taken goal midway through, the Bors were very much in contention at half time, just five points in arrears. However, Bornacoola never got going up front in the second half and Leitrim Gaels were worthy 2-11 to 0-7 winners at the full time whistle.
The team on duty was: Dara Gavigan, Tony Bohan, John “Barnes” Shanley, Sean Ryan, Dermot Shanley, Christy Bohan, Kevin Canning, Peter Mallon, Richard Bohan, Biran Mallon, Gerry Gearty, Kevin Mallon, Seoirse Reynolds, Declan Conboy and Alan Bohan. Bornacoola 1-10 Mohill 0-11
Bornacoola qualified for their fifth consecutive Masonite Senior Championship semi-final with a two point victory over neighbours Mohill in Ballinamore on Sunday evening last.
The Bors started brightly and established a 0-4 to 0-1 lead early on. However, Mohill were very strong in the second quarter and had deservingly levelled the game at 0-5 apiece by half time. They also started the second half in control and it took a goal from Colm Farrell to keep Bornacoola in contention.
However, as the second half wore on, the Bors began to find their feet and some well taken scores earned a hard fought victory on a scoreline of 1-10 to 0-11. Team and scorers: Feargal Mc Gill, Damian Mc Guinness, Conor Mc Cauley, Jason Conroy, John Mc Guinness, Morgan Shanley, Niall O Connor, Michael Duignan (0-2), Colm Farrell (1-1), Damian Moran (0-1), David O Connor (0-1), Trevor Howard, Philip Howard (0-2), Mark Mc Closkey (0-2), Brian Conroy. A word of congratulations to Cumman Seán Uí hEislin on their exceptional new facilities. The pitch was in fantastic condition despite the monsoons which fell at the weekend and the new stand and dressing room facilities are of an exceptional quality and something all of Ballinamore and Leitrim should be proud of.
Subs used: Sean Mc Keon, Jonathan Duffy.
Next up for the Bors is a re-play of last years County Final as Glencar/Manorhamilton provide the semi-final opposition

U-14 Title
Pride of place this week to our wonderful U-14 team who captured the 9-a-side title on Friday evening last when they overcame a gallant Glenfarne team in an entertaining and sporting final in Leitrim village. It has been an excellent year for the boys at this level and they worked tremendously hard throughout the championship to maintain their unbeaten record. They have also been very sporting throughout and this is every bit as important as winning titles.
Congratulations to team manager Seamus Mallon and to the entire panel of Shane Sullivan, Brian Duffy, Liam Mulligan, Robert O'Beirne, Ciaran Campbell, Sean Muldowney, Ronan Mulligan, Kevin Shanley, Dillon Hackett, Fergal Hackett, Gearoid Mulligan, Kevin Mulligan, Liam Jones and Karl Mallon.

However Carrigallen rattled off 1-3 without reply to take a three point lead into the break. An excellent opening ten minutes to the second half saw the Bors register six unanswered scores and despite some late Carrigallen pressure, we held on for a 0-14 to 1-9 victory.
Team and Scorers: Feargal Mc Gill, Damian Mc Guinness, Seamus Mallon, Jason Conroy, John Mc Guinness, Morgan Shanley (0-1), Conor Mc Cauley, Michael Duignan (0-2), Colm Farrell, David O Connor (0-1), Niall O Connor (0-1), Feargal Howard, Brian Conroy (0-1), Mark Mc Closkey (0-4) and Philip Howard (0-4). Ladies Final
The ladies played Glencar/Manorhamilton in the 9-a-side final in Leitrim village on Saturday last. Nonetheless, the girls have made a lot of progress this year and there is still plenty of football to come as they look forward to the championship.

Best Wishes
Our best wishes to Ladies stalwart Niamh Reynolds (Esker) and fiancée Enda Delaney who are getting married this weekend. Niamh, daughter of George and Evelyn, is a primary school teacher and has been a terrific worker for the club for many years. She can currently be seen starring on the Bornacoola ladies team at the weekends. Meanwhile fiancée Enda is a devoted Laois football fan and while he also enjoys watching a bit of rugby, one suspects he gets little conversation out of brothers-in-law to be Shane and Seoirse on that particular subject!! Our best wishes to you both for long life and happiness together.
